CMSD History

By the grace and blessings of Pujya Gurudev, Pujya Guruji Swami Tejomayananda and Pujya Swami Shantananda, Lakshmi and Srinivas Sukumar relocated from San Jose to San Diego to start grass-root activities in San Diego where Pujya Gurudev attained Mahasamadhi on August 3, 1993. Thus, Chinmaya Mission San Diego (CMSD) was inaugurated on January 28, 2001 in the presence of Swami Ishwarananda, Acharya of Chinmaya Mission Los Angeles.

The lamp of Chinmaya that was lit with thirty five children and about fifty adults is now leading the way to spiritual growth for over two hundred and thirty families with more than two hundred and sixty Bala Vihar children and Youth.

Various programs are conducted throughout the week and the weekend for children, youth and adults. Programs include Bala Vihar/Yuva Kendra, Samskrta Vihar, Bhagavad Gita Chanting, Language Classes, Chinmaya Dhvani (Youth Choir), Chinmaya Swaranjali (Adult Choir), Adult Vedanta & Bhagavad Gita Classes, Adult Study Groups, Devi Groups and Vedic Chanting. CMSD also participates in Community Outreach programs ranging from providing food and clothing for the homeless shelter, to presentations and symposiums on Hinduism at schools, interfaith organizations and other interested groups. Jnana yajnas and workshops and seminars on various topics from the Vaidic scriptures and applications are held periodically for adults, youth and children. CMSD’s Summer Youth camps provide a very unique opportunity for the children to experience the holistic learning of a Gurukula system.
